Blog post #4 Tips for Finding a great removals company

Tips for finding a great removals service

It can be hard to know what to look for when you’re trying to pick a man and van removals service. Recommendations are great – and if you can find them, that’s the way to go – but what if nobody you know has recently hired anyone local?

Ask around for recommendations online.

If your own friends and family don’t have anyone to recommend, the next best thing is other people who live near you. Try posting in a few local Facebook groups, or join a community WhatsApp chat – many streets and areas now have their own.

Look up reviews from past customers.

Facebook and Twitter can help with this, as can specialist consumer review sites like Trustpilot and Yelp. Look for a established removals company with multiple good reviews, but don’t necessarily be put off by one or two lower scores if there are plenty of others to balance them out.

Make sure you read their website carefully.

You want to find an established company with a few years experience and a variety of testimonials. Make sure they’re transparent about their prices, with example quotes on their website – but bear in mind that your personalised quote will vary depending on circumstances. (We’ve recently posted about what can affect your estimate, so read up on that too!)

Remember to ask a few questions - and expect some in return.

When you get in touch, make sure you include some basic information about the job – roughly how much stuff you need to get into the van, whether or not there will be stairs at either end, where the properties are and what your ideal moving date is. When someone gets back to you, they’ll probably want to clarify some details before they can give you a firm idea of cost; this shows that they’re engaged, and is another good sign of a company you can trust.

Avoid picking the cheapest service you can find.

As you search for a man and van London or removals service on Google, you might find that a few sites seem to offer much lower prices than the others. These places are mostly to be avoided: it’s a clue that you’re likely to run into hidden charges, last-minute price hikes or incompetent service from an inexperienced driver. In the worst-case scenario, these are the services who could leave you with missing or damaged belongings – or a last-minute cancellation with no time to find someone else. There’s no need to go with the most expensive company you find, but do pick from the middle of the pack.

Don’t leave it till the last minute.

The best removals services are often booked up in advance, and your move will go more smoothly if you plan ahead. Try to book at least a couple of weeks before your moving date – this will give you the most choice, and help to guarantee you can move on the date you have in mind. It’s also one less thing to stress about!
